Fermented Beauty

It's predicted to boom in 2022: skincare based on fermented ingredients. What's been around in foods since the Neolithic age now makes its way into the beauty industry.

What is fermentation?

Originally, fermentation is an ancient technique of preserving food. The purpose of fermentation was to make food more nutritious and preserving it so people can store it for longer periods of time, and it is still used today to produce foods like wine, cheese, sauerkraut, yogurt, and kombucha.

Fermentation is a natural, chemical process where microorganisms like yeast and bacteria convert carbs (such as starch and sugar) into carbon dioxide and new metabolites. The process can take place aerobically or anaerobically (in the absence of air):

It is especially these newly created metabolites which are interesting and can be benefical.

Fermented ingredients for the cosmetic industry

The process for fermented ingredients in skincare is essentially the same as for food.

Fermented skincare, much like fermented foods, means that microorganisms (bacteria) have been added, which release enzymes that break down the ingredients. As with prebiotics, the objective is to multiply the “good” bacteria at the expense of “bad” ones in order to ramp up the power of each active ingredient and boost its benefits for the skin

Not only does fermentation act as an active ingredient booster, but it also makes for a higher concentration of nutrients and antioxidants while optimizing the penetration of active ingredients into the skin. Bioferments are rich in antioxidants reducing free radical activity.

Development of beauty product launches with fermented ingredients

What used to be a niche trend only followed by small brands has now changed into a bigger movement. Lots of brands in all sectors have formulated products with fermented ingredients during the last years, andalso the giants of the beauty industry sector are starting to gradually adapt to meet new customer demands.

Mintel shows a visible increase in launches with fermented ingredients during the past 5 years. Indeed, fermented beauty is one of the beauty trends that’s predicted to boom in 2022, as revealed by projections from trend forecaster WGSN

fermentation

Most popular ingredients are fermented green/black tea, probiotics or fermented mushrooms.

Discover our unique Black BeeOme™, an elixir that is obtained by fermenting the honey of a rare and old honey bee species. Black BeeOme™ is designed for the recovery of the individual skin microflora after stress which results in a healthy, exceptionally clear and pure skin.

VinUp-Lift is another product undergoing a fermentation process which place during the production of the ice wine, when sugar is broken down and new metabolites are created.

For IceAwake™, the glacier bacteria Iodobacter ferments sugar into metabolites which fight skin aging induced by sleep deprivation.
